A good web design has big enough text that is easily read but not to big and the columns are narrower than a book. The navigation are easily understood and stay the same throughout the website. And if there is a frame it is not obtrusive. The links should color cordinate with the page color and are underlined to be easily seen. Graphics shouldn't be big and dorky and they need alt labels and matching text link. As for the general design is should download quickly be 800x600 pixels, and have good graphic elements such as pictures quotes and so on.
A bad web design has a default background of the color grey and a combination of colors for the text that make it hard to read. The text is most likely to small, crowding against the edge, stretches across the page. Maybe the paragraph form will be in all caps, bold or all italic. No text should be underlined unless it is a link. Links might be left to the default of blue and have blue link borders around the graphic. There might be links that you don't know where they will lead and links that are destracting, maybe they are not underlined so you can't tell they are links. Or the link leads to no where. Graphics will be large and take over, they wont mean anythings, and sometimes the graphics will be missing. Blinking animations are a big no no, they can distract the viewers. Junk that no one cares about would be scattered around the web site. You shouldn't need to scroll side ways. The navigation is unclear or to complex, there are complicated frames or too many frames. And the general design has flaws, a homepage that doesn't fit withing 800x600 pixels, no focal point on the page, to cluttered. And they have pages that look okay in one browser but not another.
http://www.jturnerphotography.com/ ---- I believe this is a good website the only thing that I can tell that it's missing would be that when I back track I can't tell where I have been. Besides that it is easy to read, and I love the layout of the images. The goal of this website is to show of the work that Turner has created and you can buy any ones that you like.
http://www.bottlebellphotography.com/ ---- This website is between good and bad but I am going to go with bad. I love the layout and how it works the one thing that really upsets me is when you click on her site it goes into this intro movie like thing and it gets on my nerves I keep waiting to see the site but I don't want to miss the video at one point I just skipped the video because it seemed to sit still and not really do anything. Of course having the volume off could have been why. The site is a photographer showing off her work.
http://www.yourbeautifulphotography.com/ ---- This looks like a good website everything fits on the page the text is easy to read and I know exactly what I am doing when I scroll through her images. The website is for her to advertise her work she lets you know she is available for work and I love how she has a section online that allows her clients to look at there images but only they can view it cause it is password protected.
